Statement
Manami OKAMOTO (b. 2001) is a media artist and researcher whose work explores the universal challenge of human connection.
She is deeply interested in the interactions generated by spoken words and voices, examining how transmission media—such as radios, telephones, and microphones—affect human perception. By observing how sounds and signs propagate within physical and social structures, she aims to propose methods for constructive intervention.
Driven by a critical awareness of the “black-boxing” of modern electronics, Okamoto creates self-made devices with exposed circuitry, translating these apparatuses into interactive installations and performances. Her recent public-intervention research in Bandung, Indonesia—performed in a custom fish suit equipped with a fisheye camera—earned her the Excellence Award at the CENRETA ART AWARD 2025.
